All of us have had moments when we’ve craved objective judgement. You wish your boyfriend would tell you honestly if he thinks your relationship is going to last and your best friend would cut out all the politically correct nonsense and tell you if she thinks you’re too emo, but of course, being human, you’re doomed to hearing them tell you the same things over and over again. Well, what’s the point of living in the 21st century if we don’t find ways to make living life easier?

When in doubt, ask the computer – that’s the creed most of us modern citizens of the world choose to live by! And why not? If we can trust computers to solve impossibly complex mathematical problems, we could try trusting in the impartial logic of a machine to unravel emotional tangles as well. Online quizzes are the answer to many of life’s troubles: you can drive away those mind-numbing fits of boredom when you simply can’t think of anything useful to do and find out stuff about yourself that you probably didn’t know at the same time!

Chances are, if you’re computer savvy, you’re probably a part of an online community like MySpace, Hi5 or Friendster. One of the fun things about online quiz sites is that you can post your results on your MySpace, Hi5 or Friendster profile for all your friends to see. It’s a great way to let people know more about the kind of person that you are, what you like and dislike and just have some fun.

Quite apart from telling you what you’re like or what to do, quiz sites also offer advice on common teen problems – everything from what to eat to who to date, it’s all available online 24/7. No more worrying about whether your friends are going to think you obsessive or whiny when you ask them for advice or cry on their shoulders! Sure, nothing’s better than a human perspective but when you’re really feeling low or confused, an objective perspective can be just the thing to get you back up again and ready to paint the town red.

Though of course, what a website can tell you isn’t meant to be taken too seriously anyway. So what if that quiz you took says your boyfriend is cheating on you (when you know he’d never dream of it)? Or if a survey says you need to brush up on your people skills when you know you’re super-popular? Computers, after all, can only go so far in penetrating the mysteries of the human mind. But if you’re looking to kill some time, laugh at yourself a bit and in the mood for some fun, go right ahead. Throw your caution to the wind and try to find the answers to life’s problems on that modern version of the ancient Greek oracle –the Internet
